In memory of the victims of the pandemic

Praying together

March 11, 2021

On March 11, declared a National Day of Remembrance for the victims of COVID-19, an interreligious celebration marked the first anniversary of those who died since the beginning of the pandemic.

This evening of prayer, initiated by the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism, took place virtually and brought together some 300 people of different religious affiliations, including about 50 from the Movement across North America.

For some years now, the Focolare Movement has been forging links with the Canadian Centre, participating actively in various ecumenical and interreligious events. This time, three of us were invited to be part of the preparation committee and collaborated, among other things, in the animation and technical aspects.

The Catholic and Anglican churches, the United Church, the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Baha'i and Indigenous faith communities were represented.

Each religious leader delivered a prayer, sometimes in song, with a special touch of their own faith. Music was played in the atmosphere of contemplation and unity. A minute of silence was observed.

With one heart and one soul, we all prayed together, each one becoming one with the others, beyond our differences and our religious beliefs.

One more step towards peace!
